Is Cape fuchsia a fuchsia?
Phygelius the 'Cape Fuchsia' in the Scrophulariaceae family, is a fabulous but still underused garden plant. As the common name suggests it resembles the well known Fuchsia with long tubular pendant flowers and similar foliage. However they are not closely related, stemming from different plant families.
When should I cut back Phygelius?
Though it's a semi-evergreen shrub, Phygelius 'Red Emperor' can be treated as a herbaceous perennial in colder locations, with a layer of mulch over winter to protect the roots. It can then be cut back hard in spring. Otherwise, lightly prune in spring to improve plants' shape.

All fuchsias must have plenty of light. They must have sun as well as shade and the ideal conditions are under trees where they are in dappled sun and shade all day, or on the east side of your house where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade.
