Diplodia blight is a fungal disease caused by two species of Diplodia. Diplodia pinea is more aggressive and can cause more severe damage than D. scrobiculata. These fungi overwinter in infected dead needles, twigs and cones either on the tree or on the ground.

How is Diplodia tip blight treated?

Diplodia tip blight does respond to fungicide treatments, which should start at bud break in the spring for effective control. If these treatments aren't used, then cones should also be removed during pruning because they hold many fungal spores.

What causes Diplodia tip blight?

Diplodia tip blight is caused by the fungal pathogen Diplodia pinea (also known as Sphaeropsis sapinea). Spores of the fungus develop in the black pycnidia located at the base of infected needles and other affected plant parts from spring through fall.

What is Diplodia tip blight?

Diplodia tip blight, previously known as Sphaeropsis tip blight, is a common fungal disease of stressed conifers, especially pines with needles in bunches of 2's and 3's. ... The fungus kills current year shoots and sometimes branches, and can disfigure or even kill them under severe conditions.

How do you treat needle blight?

Fungicides

  1. If trees have a history of Dothistroma needle blight, copper fungicides can be used to protect new needles from infection.
  2. Fungicides need to be applied: once just before buds open in the spring (typically in mid-May) to protect previous year's needles.

What does tip blight look like?

What does Phomopsis tip blight look like? Initially, small gray lesions (spots) form on the terminal four to six inches of new shoots in early spring. Infected branches typically first turn dull red or brown, and finally ash-gray as lesions expand to girdle and kill branch tips.

What is killing my Austrian pine trees?

Austrian pine is commonly affected by Dothistroma needle blight. The foliage of the lower half of the tree turns brown in March to April. Dothistroma needle blight is caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella pini. This common pine pathogen kills needles of all ages and can weaken or kill Austrian pine trees.

What disease do pine trees get?

Symptoms and signs. Pine wilt is a dramatic disease that typically kills affected trees within a few weeks to a few months (Figure 1). The causal pathogen is the pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

How do you control diplodia?

Management of Diplodia includes removing infected pines in fence rows, wind breaks or nursery blocks. Also, when practical prune and remove infected twigs and branches during dry weather. Apply appropriate fungicides in early spring.

How do you treat arborvitae blight tips?

The best course of action for management of any needle and shoot blight pathogen is to prune and discard as many infected plant parts as much as possible. Dead shoots and needles harbor the fungal pathogens and allow them to overwinter in the tree canopy.

How do you control Rhizosphaera needle cast?

Fungicides with the active ingredient chlorothalonil, copper hydroxide or mancozeb will protect new spruce needles from infection by Rhizosphaera.

  1. Make one application in spring or early summer when the new needles have grown to half their mature length.
  2. Make a second application 3 to 4 weeks later.

How do you trim an Austrian pine tree?

To shorten branches, prune behind new candles, making each cut just above a side bud or branch to stimulate new growth at that point. To restrain the tree's overall growth, pinch or snap off one-half to two-thirds of each candle. Disinfect your pruning shears or saw between cuts by wiping the blade in rubbing alcohol.
