How do you take care of Fritillaria?

In fertile, moist but well-drained soil, snake's head fritillaria will usually multiply and come back to bloom again each spring. To encourage these bulbs to perennialize, fertilize the plants either before they bloom or immediately afterwards. And ensure the bulbs don't completely dry out during summer and fall.

What to do with Fritillaria after flowering?

Allow the foliage to die down completely after flowering. Fritillaria meleagris will naturalise in grass if bulbs are left undisturbed. For the larger, showier types of fritillary, mulch in spring when the first shoots appear and feed with tomato fertiliser before flowers appear.

Do fritillaries self seed?

If you want them to self-sow, you must leave the flowers to set seed and not mow until late August at the earliest. The trouble with that is there may be things you don't want - thistles or docks - also in the grass, so you'll have to pick these out.

How long do Fritillaria blooms last?

They usually bloom around four weeks later. Once Fritillaria bulbs are forced, their vitality is spent and the bulbs may be discarded.

Is Fritillaria a perennial?

Although they can be quite tall, they are not imposing plants and they can be swamped by vigorous spring perennials so chose a spot carefully, where you can appreciate their subtle beauty. In a more consistently shady part of the garden, try Fritillaria pallidiflora or Fritillaria camschatcensis.

What month do Fritillaria Bloom?

Fritillaria bulbs are from the lily family. They are perennials, are deer resistant, have deciduous foliage, and bloom during spring.

Can Fritillaria be grown in pots?

You can grow Fritillaria meleagris very successfully in pots if they are kept in a damp corner on the north side of a house whilst they are dormant, but there is nothing better than seeing them seeding into a position they favour.

Are Fritillaria Hardy?

Fritillaria may look exotic, but they are easy to grow and fully hardy.

How deep do you plant Fritillaria?

They can be planted at 8-10cm deep and 10-15cm apart in well drained/light and moist soil. They can be planted in areas with full sun access or preferably with partial shade, and can be left to naturalise in grass, borders or even cold greenhouses.

When should I plant Fritillaria seeds?

Fritillaria seed ripens in mid to late summer and is best sown as soon as ripe or soon after in autumn. While older seed may still be viable it develops germination inhibitors that can make late sowings germinate erratically.

How do you get Fritillaria seeds?

In the wild Fritillaria spreads its seed by wind dispersal and seeds germinates on the surface of the ground. When sowing at home it is best to sow the seed on the surface of gritty compost and not bury it. Water the seeds and place in a cool, sheltered place out of doors such as in a cold frame.

How do you save Fritillaria seeds?

Sow in John Innes seed compost or something similar, place each container in a polythene bag and put into the refrigerator (not the freezer compartment) for 2-3 weeks.
