Redbud trees tolerate moderate dry spells, but when planted in full sun, they should be watered regularly. To keep the soil cooler and evenly moist in the summer, apply a layer of mulch out to the drip line of the limbs.

Where is the best place to plant a redbud tree?

Choose a planting site for Eastern redbuds at least 6 to 8 feet from existing structures and about 3 feet from fences. The site should receive full sun to partial shade, with the shade in the afternoon. Eastern redbuds do poorly in soggy soil, so choose a site that drains well and doesn't have standing water.

When should I fertilize my redbud tree?

Fertilize your Redbud tree in early spring for best performance. Choose a balanced slow release fertilizer. Redbuds don't generally require pruning, but if needed, prune immediately after blooming has ended to remove any dead, dying, crowded or crossed branches.

What is the best fertilizer for redbud trees?

This method of fertilization should only be done once a year, and is best done in late fall after leaf drop or in early spring before the buds break open. Multi Purpose 10-10-10 fertilizer works well.

How many years do redbud trees live?

Life span: When healthy, the redbud tree should live from 50 to 70 years. However, with certain pathogens, particularly verticilliim wilt, a wilt disease caused by fungi, and trunk cancer can significantly decrease its lifespan.

Do redbud trees need a lot of water?

For your Eastern Redbud, we recommend watering about once weekly or checking your soil. To check your soil, stick your finger in, about 2 or 3 inches down. If the soil is dry here, water until the surrounding soil is moist but not oversaturated.

How close to the house can you plant a redbud tree?

Small trees such as dogwood, redbud, hawthorn or crab may be planted 15 to 20 feet apart and no closer than 8 feet from the house when used as an accent or corner planting.

Do redbud trees smell?

Redbud Tree Ornamental Value

They are planted as specimens in the landscape or as shade trees. Planting them in a row gives a spectacular view during the flowering season. Besides ornamental value, the flowers of redbud trees are fragrant and edible. They are eaten raw in salads or prepared by boiling and frying.

Do redbud trees spread?

The eastern redbud grows to a height of 20–30' and a spread of 25–35' at maturity.

How do you keep a redbud tree small?

To keep them small and manageable, the branches of the tree should be cut back frequently. Also, they should be pruned every so often to prevent them from growing too fast. It's important that the branches that are being removed be strong enough to support the new growth coming from the original growth.

Will deer eat redbud trees?

Damage. Deer love to nibble on the spring foliage and flowers of these trees, and may even eat the buds before they can bloom. Because Eastern redbuds are on the small side, it is easy for the deer to reach the branches on these trees. Deer will also chew on the bark if they are very hungry.

How do you shape a redbud?

Trim off all stems but one from the redbud to shape it into a single-trunk tree. Start this process when the tree is very young and be diligent about annual pruning. Alternatively, accept the natural, multi-stemmed presentation but trim off lower limbs to make the shrub more tree-like.
