To help your weigela thrive, plant it in moist soil that drains well. Add plenty of compost or composted manure to the planting bed to help enrich soil and improve drainage. Weigela adapts fairly well to any soil, although you'll see strongest growth and flowering on plants in ideal conditions.

Should weigela be cut back in the fall?

Although summer pruning is best for weigelas because of their standard bloom time, fall pruning in November isn't going to kill your weigela, especially if you live in a mild climate. You won't get a flush of new blooms in spring and summer because a fall pruning will remove all buds.

Does weigela need pruning?

It is best to prune weigela shrubs in the late spring after they have finished blooming. Trimming weigela bushes right after they bloom will keep you from inadvertently pruning off next year's flowers. This is because weigela bloom on wood that it is a year old. The wood that grows this year will bloom next year.

What is the best fertilizer for weigela?

For the best shrub care, fertilize with a well-balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer once in early spring before new growth appears. NOTE: This is part 3 in a series of 7 articles. For a complete background on how to grow weigela, we recommend starting from the beginning.

How do you make weigela bushy?

Always trim each branch just above a shoot or 'growth node'. You can cut back as much growth as you want but as a standard, 1/3 off is usually enough. I recently inherited a huge straggly Weigela and trimmed it down to about 25% of its original size. This year, it has gone crazy with plenty of flowers and lush growth.

Can you hard prune weigela?

Weigela is vigorous and often outgrows its space, but pruning straight after flowering will overcome this problem. Prune after flowering to ensure the plant's energy is channelled into new growth that will flower abundantly in spring. Cut the flowered shoots back by about a third.

How do you prepare weigela for winter?

Although weigela is a hardy plant, it's prone to winter dieback, especially in areas with harsh winters. Because of this, it's a good idea to examine the plant at the end of winter and prune off any dead stems. Double-check stems that look dead by scratching the bark with a fingernail.

How do you look after weigela?

Grow weigela in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Prune back after flowering and mulch annually with a well-rotted compost or leaf mould.

When should you prune a weigela?

Pruning Weigela

The best time to prune your plants would be in the late spring. This will give you a chance to remove any wilting flowers without disturbing the branches that next year's flowers will grow from.

Why is my weigela not blooming?

Overly wet soil can be one cause. Variegated weigela thrives in moist but well-drained soil. Improper fertilizing hinders blooming, too. High-nitrogen fertilizers fuel vegetative growth at the expense of flowers.

What can I plant next to weigela?

Companion Planting and Design

In a hedgerow, plant tall weigela varieties with other large shrubs, such as lilacs and viburnums, or on the corner of a building so to not block a view. In a mixed shrub border, plant compact varieties with interesting foliage in with perennial flowers or along the foundation.

What do I feed my weigela?

By fertilizing young shrubs you can increase both the size and the amount of flowers on the plant. Granular, liquid or stake type fertilizers can be used. Granular types should be worked into the soil around the plant at a rate of 2 pounds or 2 pints per 100 square feet of planting bed.

Why are my weigela dying?
