Care for thyme by locating the plant in full sun, and only water the plant when the soil has had a chance to dry out somewhat between bouts of watering and the thyme should begin to revive.

Will my thyme plant grow back?

A majority of herbs are perennials throughout most of the United States. That means they come back year after year and usually get bigger or spread in territory each year. Some of our most-used cooking herbs are perennials, including sage, oregano and thyme.

Why is my thyme plant drying out?

The thyme plant grows well in slightly dry soil. It can develop root rot or mildew problems if it's kept too wet. As the roots suffocate and die in wet soil, the foliage will also begin to die back. Drought and overly dry foliage can also cause dieback, although usually the whole plant declines at the same rate.

How do you revive Woody thyme?

Dig up the plant, dig a deeper hole and replant so that only the leafy growth is showing; essentially you bury the woody stems. (Do not try this on a hot day or if the plant is in flower.) The soil must be gritty, otherwise the stems will rot. Keep the plant well watered till you see signs of new growth.

How do you revive a dying herb plant?

Depending on your herb, light pruning or hard pruning might be best. If you harvested the herbs and the plant is looking unhealthy, it might be a signal that you overdid it. Wait a few days, giving the plant the chance to bounce back; if not, it might be time to plant a new one.

Does thyme die in winter?

Although sage, oregano and thyme will provide leaves over winter without protection, you should check their growing guides in case your winter temperatures are so low that small plants should be potted up and taken indoors.

How often should I water thyme?

Water: Most varieties of thyme are drought-resistant, so only give a thorough watering, when the soil is completely dry. Spacing: Thyme is a vigorous grower, so be sure to space accordingly. Plant anywhere from 12 to 24 inches apart, depending upon the specific variety.

Why has my thyme gone black?

Over watering and slow draining soils promote the conditions for fungal pathogens that cause thyme plants to turn brown. Thyme can also turn brown due to age as thyme (like a lot of Mediterranean herbs) is not particularly long lived plant and may naturally turn brown and die after 4 years even with good care.

How can you tell if thyme is bad?

Fresh thyme goes bad after a couple of weeks in the fridge.

It's spoiled if: everything is soft and slimy (you can cut out small mushy areas, though) the sprigs are wilted, which is caused by moisture loss (that's usually accompanied by loss of flavor)

Why is my thyme so Woody?

When growing thyme, you need to regularly prune it throughout the years in order to promote a good shape of the herb and encourage continual growth. Thyme that has become overgrown due to a lack of pruning will be very woody and won't produce many new stems and leaves.

Should I trim my thyme plant?

Thyme plants, like most woody herbs, do best when they are pruned regularly. Taking the time to trim thyme not only creates a nicer looking plant, but also helps improve the amount you can harvest from the plant.
