Is woad a weed?
Dyers woad is a non-palatable, aggressive weed with allelopathic properties. Originally cultivated as a source of Indigo dye, this species escaped cultivation and has a history of establishing across thousands of acres of western rangeland.
What kills dyer's woad?
The most effective herbicides for dyer's woad control are 2,4-D and chlorsulfuron.
How do you control dyer's woad?
Treatments with metsulfuron and chlorsulfuron will selectively control dyer's woad and allow native grasses to return naturally. When 2,4-D is used, early spring timing will reduce impact to nontarget plant species. Picloram and dicamba, applied alone, have not been found effective in controlling dyer's woad.
What does dyer's woad look like?
Shaped like arrowheads, the leaves become progressively smaller up the stem. The bright yellow flowers are borne in a highly branched inflorescence that is either flat-topped or umbrella-shaped. Each small flower has six stamens and four petals that are spoon-shaped. Dyer's woad flowers April through June.

All leaves have a prominent cream colored mid-rib extending the entire length of the leaf, and a bluish-green color. The leaf color and prominent mid-rib are good identifying characteristics of dyer's woad. The weed has a thick, fleshy tap root that penetrates down to 3 feet into the soil.
How do you use woad dye?
Use a whisk for 10 minutes to mix and create a frothy brew. Dip out the brew into jars and let it settle for several hours. The pigment at the bottom is your woad dye. The liquid needs to be strained from the sediment.

Woad is considered a noxious weed in much of the western U.S., including California, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, California, Oregon, and Washington state. The classification “noxious weed” means that it is illegal to grow it because it is considered so detrimental to agricultural productivity.
