There are two main methods of propagating freesias: by seed and by corm division. Both have high success rates, so it's really up to you and how you want to go about things. Freesias grown from seed usually take 8 to 12 months to bloom, while plants grown from divided corms will take a few years.

How do I transplant freesia?

WHEN AND WHERE TO PLANT FREESIA

Choose a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil that contains plenty of organic matter. Plant the corms pointed end up, 1” to 2” deep and 2” to 3” apart. Over time they will multiply. In cooler zones, freesias can be planted outdoors in spring for late summer flowers.

How do I start freesias?

Start by choosing a location with full sun or light morning shade and well-drained soil. Prepare the bed by digging and loosening the soil to a depth of at least 8 inches. Plant the freesia bulbs, or corms, at least 2 inches (5 cm.) deep and 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm.)

Should freesia bulbs be soaked before planting?

Pre-Planting Planning

Store bulbs in a cool spot, placing them in a paper bag until the right planting time comes along. Soak the freesia's corms in water for 30 minutes before planting.

How long does it take freesia bulbs to sprout?

Once planted, freesias should be well watered but not again until sprouts appear. Corms usually sprout in one to three months depending upon site and variety. In containers, use a bulb planting mixture that will have all the necessary texture and nutrients for plant and flower formation.

Do freesias flower more than once?

If you live somewhere where it either never (or rarely) freezes then yes, your freesias should grow back. They may even multiply by spreading fertilised seeds so you could have a garden bursting with colour every spring!

How to plant freesias. Freesias are versatile and can be grown in pots indoors or outdoors, or in the ground. Freesias aren't frost-hardy so can only be planted outdoors in spring or early summer. Well-drained soil or potting compost is essential as freesias are likely to rot in heavy or waterlogged soil.

What freesia smells like?

Freesia is a very sweet-smelling flower, almost reminiscent of strawberries or other summer fruit. Some people even describe it as smelling like Fruit Loops! But it's much more mild than that with subtle high notes of honey and mint.

Can you take cuttings from freesias?

REMOVE any dead or mouldy foliage at once. DON'T fiddle with your cuttings: allow them to root undisturbed. SNIP off any flowers or flower buds that appear. ROOT more cuttings than you need - it's unlikely that 100 per cent will take.

What month do you plant freesia bulbs?

Our prepared freesia corms can be planted in autumn for flowering inside from January to April or from March (in a greenhouse) or April-July (outside). I have gone on planting outside until July for flowers almost up until Christmas. Plant the corms straight into the ground in a well-drained spot in sun or light shade.

Can you propagate freesias?

Freesias are most commonly grown from corms, but they can also be started with seed. Just be aware, seed may not give a plant that is true to the parent, and it may take several years before you see the first flowers.
